Fulham made a move that nobody really saw coming. Alvaro Arbeloa is your new head coach, coming off a pretty rocky six months in charge at Real Madrid. The Spaniard signed a three-year deal that keeps him at Craven Cottage through 2029.
Marco Silva left when his contract expired at the end of last season, heading to Benfica to replace Jose Mourinho. That left Fulham scrambling. Names like Arne Slot and Kieran McKenna were floating around. But Arbeloa won the job, and his first Premier League match? That’s against Chelsea, managed by his former teammate Xabi Alonso. West London is about to get interesting.
Why Arbeloa?
Look, the guy’s managerial track record is not exactly glittering. His only real experience was six months with Real Madrid’s first team after Xabi Alonso got sacked. Reports out of Spain suggested he lost the locker room, clashed with players, and finished the season with no trophies. That’s a short, messy resume.
But Fulham’s owner Shahid Khan said Arbeloa built an exceptional case for himself during interviews in June. Khan added, I am delighted that Alvaro has accepted the challenge to push Fulham forward, and I have no doubt that our squad, staff and fans will resonate with what his appointment means for the present and future of our Club.
So yeah. The guy who couldn’t keep Real Madrid together is now supposed to push Fulham into Europe. That’s either bold or insane. Maybe both.
What Arbeloa Said
The new boss sounded the right notes in his first statement. It is a real honour for me to be embarking on this new stage at Fulham FC, the oldest club in London,
he said. I am really looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere at Craven Cottage with Fulham fans and beginning pre-season with the players next week. I am sure we are going to enjoy an incredible journey together.
Preseason starts next week. He’ll need every bit of that good will. Fulham finished last season one point out of a European spot. That’s close. But the squad just watched their head coach walk out. Now they get a guy whose last gig ended with him reportedly feuding with his own players.
The first real test comes fast. Chelsea, with Xabi Alonso on the sideline, will be waiting. That’s a storyline that writes itself. Two former Real Madrid teammates. One coaching the team Fulham wants to catch. The other trying to prove his six months in Madrid were a fluke, not a pattern.
It’s gonna be a weird season in west London. Buckle up.
