Jung Hoo Lee Trade Talks Heat Up as Giants Face Painful Reality Check

The San Francisco Giants are sitting at 38-52 and the math is brutal. They’re not catching anyone in the NL West. So the question isn’t whether they’ll sell at the deadline. It’s how deep they’re willing to cut.

Jung Hoo Lee might be the most interesting name on that list. ESPN recently ranked him No. 7 on their trade market board and gave him roughly a 50-50 shot at getting moved. That’s not a guarantee. But it’s enough to start paying attention.

Here’s what makes Lee attractive to other teams. He’s 27 years old. He’s top five in MLB in both batting average and strikeout rate. His slugging percentage sits above .450. And he can play all three outfield spots. That doesn’t scream superstar. It does scream everyday starter on a contender.

ESPN’s scouting report backs that up. Lee has the fourth-best in-zone contact rate in the majors. He hits the ball hard regularly but his raw power is below average. Think eight to 12 homers a year with an elite average. A solid player. Not a headliner. But in a league starving for consistent contact, that profile has real value.

The list of potential suitors is long. Phillies, Braves, Guardians, Padres, Diamondbacks, Rangers, Rays, and Marlins all make sense as fits. Some of those teams need outfield help. Others just need a reliable bat who won’t strike out 180 times.

Lee isn’t the only Giant who could go. Matt Chapman and Luis Arraez are both logical trade candidates. The Giants might hold onto Rafael Devers though. His value is lower than it could be right now, drama or no drama. Moving him at a discount doesn’t help anyone.

This feels like a franchise standing at a crossroads. The roster isn’t bad enough to bottom out completely. But it’s not good enough to pretend they’re close. Trading Lee would hurt in the short term. The return could speed up whatever comes next.

We’ll know more by the deadline. For now, the Giants are listening. And a lot of teams are calling.
