Kevin Guskiewicz Reverses Course on Clemson After Michigan State Power Brokers Stepped In

Kevin Guskiewicz is staying at Michigan State. A few weeks after everyone thought he was headed to Clemson, the university president pulled a U-turn that basically nobody saw coming — and the people who made it happen are exactly who you’d expect.

The decision was finalized over the weekend, according to a 247Sports report. Guskiewicz told Clemson officials on Monday he was out, clearing the way for him to remain Michigan State’s president. The list of people who helped make that happen is pretty telling: men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo, five members of the Board of Trustees, and a group of major donors. They all worked together to convince Guskiewicz to stay.

This is the same guy who, back in May, announced he was leaving East Lansing to take the top job at Clemson. That news had Izzo fired up — he publicly called out the Board of Trustees, basically saying the university was losing its leader because of internal dysfunction. Now, the same coach whose anger over the departure helped spark this whole reversal is being credited as one of the key figures in bringing Guskiewicz back.

Izzo’s reaction made this bigger than it already was

When Guskiewicz first said he was leaving, Izzo didn’t hold back. He told reporters the board had screwed up. He said Michigan State was losing someone who actually had a vision. It was the kind of blunt, almost exasperated reaction that gets people talking — and apparently gets people in rooms making phone calls.

Guskiewicz released a statement explaining his decision. He said the last few weeks involved a lot of conversations, some deep personal reflection, and a renewed commitment to Michigan State. He specifically thanked Board Chair Brianna Scott and Vice Chair Renee Knake Jefferson for working with him on governance issues. The board agreed to a more robust structure, including updates to the Code of Ethics and Conduct. Basically, they gave him enough assurance that the internal chaos he was worried about wouldn’t keep happening.

“I have decided to remain at Michigan State University and continue serving as your president,” Guskiewicz said.

What happens next for Michigan State

This whole thing was messy, but now it’s settled. Guskiewicz is back, and he can actually focus on the job. One of the biggest items on his to-do list is hiring a new athletic director. Michigan State has been running without a permanent AD for a while, and that role is critical — especially with the football and basketball programs in the middle of their own transitions.

The weird part is that Guskiewicz only became Michigan State’s 22nd president in March 2024, after serving as chancellor at UNC. He barely had time to get settled before the Clemson offer came along. Now he’s back, and the donors who helped make this happen are probably going to expect some results.

For a program that’s dealt with a lot of instability — from the Larry Nassar scandal to coaching changes to constant board drama — this at least gives Michigan State something it hasn’t had in a while: a president who actually wants to be there.
