Brad Stevens Addresses Jaylen Brown’s ‘Disrespect’ Claims After Blockbuster Trade

The Jaylen Brown era in Boston is officially over. The Celtics finalized their blockbuster trade sending the All-Star wing to the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday, and team president Brad Stevens faced the media for the first time since the deal went public. One question hung in the air: does he have any regrets about how the whole thing went down?

Brown made it clear he wasn’t thrilled with the process. During a livestream after the trade was announced, he said he felt a lack of respect from the organization that drafted him third overall in 2016. “Boston, they packed me up… I wasn’t thrilled with the amount of respect that was shown during this process,” Brown said. “There was a bit of a lack of respect. I think it was fine at one point, and then things just kind of went left.”

He specifically called out Stevens, saying he wasn’t happy with how the front office handled conversations. “Brad is probably getting a lot of the criticism for the trade. I wasn’t thrilled with the way he facilitated some of the conversations. But I definitely think there’s more to it. I just wish that the more to it could’ve been explained to me.”

Stevens Responds

Stevens acknowledged the tension during his press conference. “I’m hopeful that we can sit down and talk about that at some point, but I’m sorry that he feels that way,” Stevens said. The comment was measured, almost diplomatic, but it doesn’t erase the fact that Brown felt blindsided.

The trade itself was a stunner. Boston sent Brown to Philly in a package that reportedly includes multiple picks and salary filler, bringing back a mix of young talent and future assets. The Celtics didn’t land a superstar in return, which raised eyebrows across the league. The move signals either a retooling around Jayson Tatum or a longer-term reset depending on who you ask.

Brown had been a key piece of Boston’s core for years, making multiple All-Star appearances and helping the team reach the NBA Finals in 2022. But contract extension talks had been rocky, and whispers of locker room friction never fully went away. Still, the speed of the deal caught everyone off guard, including Brown himself.

Fans online had plenty to say. Some argued the Celtics could have gotten more in return. Others pointed out that Brown’s frustration with transparency isn’t exactly new. The veteran wing has been open in the past about wanting clearer communication from the front office regarding his role and future.

What happens next is anyone’s guess. Brown lands in Philly alongside Joel Embiid, giving the Sixers a legitimate second star and instantly making them a contender in the East. Boston, meanwhile, bets on Tatum carrying the load while younger pieces develop. Whether Stevens can smooth things over with Brown remains to be seen. For now, the relationship is strained. And the Celtics are moving on without him.
