Skylar Diggins Sent to Bench. Her Reaction Video Is Going Viral.

The Chicago Sky are 6-14 and on a two-game losing streak. So coach Teresa Weatherspoon is shaking things up. Veteran guard Skylar Diggins is moving to the bench. And Diggins found out the way most of us do these days: on social media.

On Monday morning, Diggins posted what looked like a screenshot of a message informing her of the lineup change. Her caption was three words: “to whom it may concern.” Then she followed it with a video of herself, clearly caught off guard.

“And the crazy part about it all is I’ve been so quiet,” Diggins said in the clip. “I’ve been so good and quiet. I’ve been so good and quiet.”

The video, first reported by Meghan L. Hall of USA Today Sports, did not exactly scream team-first acceptance. It sounded more like somebody who had been holding it in and finally decided to let it out.

The Numbers Don’t Lie, But the Situation Is Tricky

Diggins is a seven-time All-Star. She joined the Sky this offseason after two years with the Seattle Storm and has started all 19 games she’s played this season. She’s averaging 14.2 points, 4.9 assists and 3.2 rebounds while shooting 38.2 percent from three. So this isn’t a performance benching in the traditional sense. It’s a strategic reset, or maybe just a desperate one.

The Sky are also banged up. Rickea Jackson is out for the season with a torn ACL she suffered in May. DiJonai Carrington still hasn’t played a game this year while rehabbing an injury. Courtney Vandersloot just returned after missing the first 17 games. So it’s not like Weatherspoon has a full deck to work with. Moving Diggins to the bench could be an attempt to stabilize the second unit or to send a message about accountability. Neither option is great for a vet of Diggins’ stature.

A Career Built on Being a Starter

Diggins was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft out of Notre Dame. She started her career with the Tulsa Shock, stayed with the franchise through its move to Dallas and the rebrand to the Wings, then spent three seasons in Phoenix before her Seattle stint. She has started the vast majority of games she’s played in this league. Coming off the bench is not something she’s used to.

The Sky have not officially confirmed the lineup change or given a reason for it. But Diggins’ reaction makes it pretty clear this wasn’t a mutual decision. Whether it lights a fire under her or creates more friction will be something to watch. Chicago plays again Tuesday night, so we won’t have to wait long to see how this plays out.
