Giannis Antetokounmpo Might Ditch No. 34 for the Heat. Here’s What He Said.

The Miami Heat landed Giannis Antetokounmpo in a blockbuster trade with the Milwaukee Bucks, and while the team announced he’d keep wearing No. 34, the two-time MVP just threw some serious doubt into that plan.

During a live stream with popular social media influencer Neon, Antetokounmpo was asked if he’d ever consider changing his number. His answer wasn’t a quick no. It was more of a maybe leaning toward yes.

He said he’d thought about it and hadn’t picked a new number yet but that it would change this season. When Neon suggested No. 7, Antetokounmpo called it “not a bad number” and said he liked it. The streamer pushed further, and Antetokounmpo even shook his hand as if to seal the deal.

Was it a joke or a real hint?

Here’s where it gets a little messy. The whole exchange had a playful vibe, and the reactions from everyone in the room made it look like they were in on something. Heat insider Ethan Skolnick of Five Reasons Sports posted on X that he’d been told it was a joke. So maybe Antetokounmpo was just messing around with a fan base that’s been Photoshopping his face onto Heat jerseys for years.

But here’s the thing: No. 7 has some history in Miami. Goran Dragic wore it. Kyle Lowry wore it. Kel’el Ware wore it last season, and he was actually part of the trade that went back to Milwaukee. If Antetokounmpo switches, it wouldn’t be random.

Still, the team has already started selling official jerseys with his name and No. 34 on the back. That’s a real product people can buy right now. If he changes numbers later, those become collectibles or headaches depending on how you look at it.

For now, the Heat and their fans are just happy to have him. Tim Hardaway Jr. is also coming in and will reportedly wear his father’s retired No. 10, which is a whole separate story about the organization bending its own rules. But that’s for another day.

The Antetokounmpo era in Miami officially begins, jersey number still in question. Whether he stays with 34 or flips to 7, the real story is that a perennial MVP candidate just joined a team that was one piece away. And that piece might be wearing a different number by opening night.
