The Miami Heat made it official Monday afternoon. Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. are now Heat players. Fans can finally buy jerseys with his name on them in Heat colors, no Photoshop required.

Pat Riley doesn’t do small announcements. When he speaks, it matters. So when the Heat president released a statement calling this trade “one of the great trades in HEAT history,” people listened. He called Antetokounmpo a top-five player in the league and Portis one of the best power forwards in the game.

That’s not hyperbole from Riley. He’s been around. He’s seen the Heat pull off blockbuster moves before. Shaquille O’Neal in 2004. Alonzo Mourning in 1995. Tim Hardaway during the 1995-96 season. Jimmy Butler in 2019. He knows what a franchise-altering trade looks like.

And he thinks this one belongs in that conversation.

The cost of doing business

The Heat didn’t get Giannis for nothing. Riley acknowledged the tough part of the deal was saying goodbye to four former first-round picks: Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, and Kasparas Jakucionis. Miami also sent out three first-round picks (2026, 2031, and 2033), a 2030 pick swap, and a 2033 second-rounder.

That’s a lot. But for a player like Antetokounmpo, you pay the price.

“The difficult part is trading Tyler, Kasparas, Jaime, and Kel’el, who have given so much to this organization, we wish them nothing but the best,” Riley said. He also thanked the Arison family for their continued commitment to winning championships. “We feel this gives us a better opportunity moving forward. I want to welcome Giannis and Bobby to the Miami HEAT family.”

It’s rare to see Riley get this personal about outgoing players. Herro was a Heat lifer, drafted by the team in 2019 and a key part of their playoff runs. Jaquez looked like a steal at No. 18 in 2023. Ware and Jakucionis were recent first-rounders with upside. But Riley made the call.

Miami has been aggressive in other pursuits too, including whispers about LeBron James. But the Antetokounmpo deal is the one that actually happened. And it changes everything for a Heat team that needed a jolt.

Portis isn’t a throw-in either. He’s a versatile big who can space the floor, rebound, and brings the kind of edge Miami fans love. Put him next to Bam Adebayo and Antetokounmpo, and that frontcourt suddenly looks terrifying.

The Heat posted a video on X with the caption “LET’S FREAKIN’ GO!” and a clip of Antetokounmpo in a Heat jersey. Social media went nuts, as you’d expect. But the real reaction will come when this team takes the floor.

A new era in South Beach starts now. And Pat Riley, as always, had the last word.
