Giannis Antetokounmpo Posted a Farewell Video for Milwaukee. The Bucks Are Already Moving On.

Giannis Antetokounmpo made it official two weeks ago when the Bucks shipped him to Miami. But the real goodbye just dropped.

The former MVP posted a video on X to thank the organization, the city and the fans who watched him grow from a skinny 18-year-old draft pick into a Finals MVP and a legend. It was emotional. It was sincere. And it basically confirmed what everyone already knew: this breakup hurt both sides.

How We Got Here

The Bucks drafted Antetokounmpo 15th overall in 2013. He wasn’t supposed to become this. But he did. He won two MVPs, a Defensive Player of the Year and led Milwaukee to its first championship in 50 years back in 2021. That title run was electric. Since then? One playoff series win. That’s it.

The roster aged, the cap got tight and the Eastern Conference got deeper. Last season, it was pretty obvious the relationship had run its course. Still, the Bucks dragged their feet. They kept trying to make it work long after it stopped making sense. Finally, Milwaukee pulled the trigger and sent Giannis to the Heat for a package headlined by Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and a pile of draft picks.

According to reports, the talks had been circling for months. The Bucks wanted a proper rebuild haul. Miami wanted a superstar. They met somewhere in the middle.

The Video

Antetokounmpo’s post didn’t include any bombshells. No behind-the-scenes drama, no leaked frustrations. Just a guy saying thank you to the place that raised him. He talked about the fans who showed up every night, even when the team was bad. He talked about the staff who believed in him when he could barely shoot a free throw. It was the kind of thing you’d expect from someone who genuinely loved where he played, even after the trade rumors turned into real life.

Fans online noted that he made sure to mention Milwaukee by name multiple times. Not “the Bucks.” Milwaukee. The city. That detail didn’t go unnoticed.

What’s Next for the Bucks

Milwaukee is officially in rebuild mode now. The roster is young. The cap sheet is cleaner than it’s been in years. They’ve got Herro, who can score in bunches, and Jaquez, who already looks like a steal from the 2023 draft. The picks from Miami won’t convey for a while, but the Bucks have flexibility they haven’t had since before Giannis got good.

Still, nobody’s pretending this will be quick. The Bucks went from title favorites to a team that might not sniff the play-in tournament next season. That’s a hard fall. But the front office seems okay with that. Sometimes you have to bottom out before you can climb back.

The 2026-27 schedule drops next month. It’ll feel strange seeing Antetokounmpo listed under Miami for those first few games against Milwaukee. Strange and probably a little sad. But that’s the business.
