Manchester United’s plan to poach talent from their neighbors’ academy just took a hit. The 16-year-old midfielder Xavier Parker, who was reportedly on United’s radar, won’t be making the switch this summer.
According to academy sources cited by the Manchester Evening News, the buzz around Parker heading to Old Trafford has been overstated. Not happening. At least not right now.
Parker joined Manchester City two years ago from West Ham and has been turning heads ever since. The England Under-16 international is versatile too — he can play up top or in midfield. Last season for City’s Under-18 side, he bagged six goals and seven assists in all competitions. Not bad for a kid who’s still 16.
INEOS Has Big Plans for Carrington
United’s new ownership group, INEOS, has been clear about wanting to rebuild the club’s youth pipeline. Jason Wilcox, who spent years across town at City, is leading that charge. The plan was ambitious: target David Eze, Karim Cassim, and Xavier Parker from City’s system. But Parker is off the table for now, according to the reports.
That doesn’t mean United’s academy push is stalled. They’ve already locked in Colombian wonderkid Cristian Orozco, and they’re linked with several homegrown prospects like Charlton’s Tyrie Arojogun, Derby’s Blake Henry, and Liverpool’s Isaac Konde. Those deals are still in play, and United hopes to bring in multiple young talents this window.
Senior Squad Still Needs Work
On the first-team side, things have been messier. City beat United to the punch on Elliot Anderson. Tottenham snagged Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes before United could finish. So INEOS is scrambling a bit. The club is now linked with a bunch of midfielders from outside the Premier League — Aurelien Tchouameni, Ayyoub Bouaddi, and Johan Manzambi are all names floating around.
If United can still land Eze and Cassim from City’s academy, that would send a strong message. Walking into the blue side of Manchester and taking their most promising youngsters? That’s the kind of move that turns heads. But losing Parker to the noise dying down? It’s a reminder that these cross-town academy raids are never as easy as they look on paper.
For now, United keeps pushing. Parker stays at City. And the summer transfer window keeps spinning.
