Man United’s Last-Ditch Pitch to Elliot Anderson: ‘You Can Be Our Captain’

Manchester United really wanted Elliot Anderson. Like, really wanted him. So much so that they reportedly dangled something they almost never offer to a 23-year-old who hasn’t played a single minute for the club: the future captaincy.

Anderson, the Nottingham Forest midfielder who just got a $116 million move to Manchester City, was United’s top midfield target heading into this summer. But the Red Devils ran into two problems. First, City wanted him too and Anderson preferred the City project. Second, and probably more decisive, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis wanted a fee that exceeded the $125 million Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak. That number made United flinch.

According to The Athletic, United’s recruitment staff had conversations about making Anderson captain somewhere down the line. They saw genuine leadership potential in him, the kind of guy who could wear the armband for years if he delivered on the pitch. But — and this is the key part — no promises were ever made. It was more of a “hey, this is something we can see happening” kind of discussion, not a contractual clause.

In the end, the financial math didn’t work. United need at least two, maybe three new midfielders this summer. Dumping $116 million on one player, even one as talented as Anderson, would have gutted their ability to fill the other holes. So they backed off.

City didn’t. They agreed to pay Forest the full $116 million for Anderson, who will earn a reported $300,000 per week at the Etihad. United can talk about captaincy all they want, but cash talks louder than armbands.

United’s midfield shopping list keeps growing

The Anderson miss stings, but it’s not the only one. United also lost out on Mateus Fernandes, who chose Tottenham. Their summer to-do list still has names like Carlos Baleba (Brighton), Felix Nmecha (Borussia Dortmund), Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace), and Ayyoub Bouaddi (Lille).

They did get one thing done. United agreed a deal with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson, though that move won’t be official until after Brazil finishes its World Cup run. One down. At least two to go.
