LeBron James turns 42 next season. That’s old enough that even his biggest fans have to wonder how much he has left in the tank. But his agent Rich Paul isn’t worried. He’s already mapping out a scenario that puts LeBron back in Miami.
Paul appeared on the “Game Over” podcast with Max Kellerman and ran through a whiteboard of possible landing spots for James. The Heat were up there alongside the Warriors and Cavaliers. And Paul didn’t hold back on why South Beach makes sense.
“You go down south. Mitchell, Wiggins, Giannis, Bam. Plus Pat. Plus Spo,” Paul said, repeating a now-viral line from the show.
It’s a lot to unpack. Miami just pulled off a blockbuster trade to bring Giannis Antetokounmpo in next to Bam Adebayo. Andrew Wiggins and Davion Mitchell round out a core that suddenly looks like a problem for the rest of the East. And if you add LeBron to that mix? You’re talking about maybe the most versatile defensive lineup in the league.
Kellerman made the point that LeBron can’t carry both sides of the floor the way he did in 2012. That’s not a hot take, it’s just reality. But with Giannis and Bam behind him, plus Wiggins and Mitchell on the wings, LeBron could pick his spots. He could conserve energy for the offensive end and still trust that the defense holds up.
“At LeBron’s age, he can play defense here and there,” Kellerman said. “What he needs is a guy like Bam on his team. A guy like Giannis on his team, Wiggins, Off Night [Mitchell], same thing. Defensively, it’s perfect for him.”
The fit makes sense on paper. LeBron’s playmaking and shot creation are still elite. Miami doesn’t have a ton of shooting right now, but they have enough connective pieces that a guy like James could orchestrate everything. And there’s the history too. He went to four straight Finals there and won two rings. That’s not nothing.
Of course, this is all speculation until something actually happens. The Heat haven’t confirmed any talks. LeBron hasn’t said a word. But Rich Paul planted the seed in a pretty loud way. And if there’s one thing we’ve learned over the years, it’s that when Paul starts talking about a landing spot, it’s usually worth paying attention to.
For now, Miami’s front office is probably just happy to be in the conversation.
