Leeds United Are Closing In on Zion Suzuki. Juventus Just Made It Complicated.

Leeds United have been the most persistent club in the race for Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, but Juventus just made things a lot more interesting. The 23-year-old shot-stopper has been on Leeds’ radar for months, and they’ve already opened negotiations with Parma. Now the Old Lady is poking around too.

Reports out of Italy say Juventus have registered their interest in Suzuki, who turned heads at the World Cup before Japan got knocked out by Brazil in the Round of 32. Aston Villa had scouts at that tournament watching him, but Leeds acted faster. They made an inquiry last month and have been in talks with Parma ever since Japan’s exit.

Why Leeds think they’re still the favorites

According to Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari, Leeds remain “ahead of the competition” despite Juventus entering the picture. That’s not just talk either. Parma went out and signed another goalkeeper this summer, which pretty much confirms they expect Suzuki to leave. Leeds have been readying a serious offer, and the sense is they want to lock this down before other clubs can build momentum.

There’s also the Karl Darlow situation. Darlow’s contract at Elland Road expired, and he’s now a free agent. Manchester United have been sniffing around him, which tells you Daniel Farke is comfortable letting him walk. Lucas Perri fell out of favor last season too. So the path to becoming Leeds’ long-term No. 1 is actually wide open for Suzuki. That’s a real selling point.

Juventus still have other options

Juventus have been hunting for a starting goalkeeper all summer. They’ve talked to Aston Villa about Emiliano Martinez but haven’t gotten anywhere close to a deal. Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario is also still on their list, and there are whispers Spurs might lower their asking price. So Suzuki isn’t their only play. He’s more of a Plan B or C right now, which is good news for Leeds.

Parma are going to ask for a decent fee. The kid is 23, Japanese international with World Cup experience, and there’s a bidding war starting to form. But Leeds have been working this deal way longer than Juventus have. They know the price range. They know the player’s camp. They’ve put in the hours.

Can Juventus swoop in late and steal this? Sure. It’s happened before. But right now, Leeds have the clearer pitch: come here, you’re the guy. At Juventus he’d be one of three names in a hat. That might be the difference.
