Andre Onana Is Headed Back to Turkey After Manchester United Cleared the Way

Manchester United officially confirmed Wednesday that goalkeeper Andre Onana is returning to Trabzonspor on loan for the 2026-27 season. The move ends any lingering uncertainty about his future at Old Trafford after a turbulent two years in England.

Onana spent last season on loan with the Turkish Super Lig side, making 40 appearances and helping them finish third in the league while lifting the Turkish Cup. The Cameroonian was a starter under Trabzonspor’s manager but seemed open to coming back to United and competing for the job under Michael Carrick. According to multiple reports, that was never really a realistic path.

United’s Goalkeeping Logjam Was Too Tight

The writing was on the wall by last summer. Then-manager Ruben Amorim started the 2025-26 campaign with Altay Bayindir in goal, and Onana’s only appearance that season came in a humiliating EFL Cup loss to Grimsby Town. United then signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, which basically confirmed Onana was done at the club. Lammens is now considered the undisputed starter, and with Onana’s hefty salary still on the books, a permanent exit was always going to be complicated.

This loan deal keeps things simple. Trabzonspor is covering his full salary again, which is notable because United’s return to the Champions League actually triggered a raise in Onana’s contract. The club is also getting a €1.5 million loan fee, per Samuel Luckhurst of The Sun. Not a massive haul, but it helps offset the books.

Fabrizio Romano first reported that the two sides had agreed terms, and United’s official statement confirmed the deal is now done pending international clearance and registration. The club statement was brief: “Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has joined Trabzonspor on loan for the duration of the 2026/27 season.” It also noted Onana made 102 appearances for United since signing in 2023 and wished him well for the campaign ahead.

The End of a Short, Strange Era

Onana arrived from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023 with a reputation as one of the best ball-playing keepers in Europe. He had just helped Inter reach the Champions League final. But his time at United was marked by inconsistency — some brilliant saves, some high-profile errors, and a general feeling that he never fully settled. Amorim didn’t trust him. The fans had mixed feelings. And once Lammens arrived, the math was simple.

Now he’s back in Trabzon, where he seemed genuinely comfortable last year. The club’s president had talked openly about wanting to keep him. For Onana, it’s a chance to play regularly, stay in Europe, and maybe get his career back on track. For United, it’s one less expensive problem to manage.
