The Phoenix Suns made a quiet roster move Thursday that might sting a little for Warriors fans. They signed former Golden State guard Pat Spencer to a two-way contract, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. It’s not a splashy pickup, but it’s the kind of depth move that can pay off if injuries hit.
Spencer, 29, spent the last three seasons with the Warriors and earned more minutes every year. Last season was his best. He averaged 7.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 3.5 assists while shooting 42.7% from the field and 35.7% from three. That’s not star production, but it’s solid for a guy on a two-way deal.
“Free agent guard Pat Spencer has agreed to a two-way NBA contract with the Phoenix Suns, sources tell ESPN,” Charania reported. “Spencer’s role grew across three seasons in Golden State, where he averaged 7.2 points and 18.6 minutes last season.”
The question is whether Spencer actually sees the floor in Phoenix. Two-way contracts don’t guarantee playing time. The Suns look set to roll with a starting backcourt of Devin Booker and Jalen Green, with Collin Gillespie and Luke Kennard as bench options. The starting group also includes Dillon Brooks, Mikal Bridges, and Mark Williams. So Spencer is probably looking at minutes only if someone gets hurt or the rotation gets shaken up.
Still, the guy has shown he can play. He came up through the Warriors system and knows how to move without the ball and hit the occasional three. That’s not nothing for a team that got bounced in the first round of the playoffs last season and wants more.
Phoenix’s roster looks mostly set for the 2026-27 season, but that doesn’t mean the front office is done tinkering. Two-way signings like this one are low-risk moves that sometimes produce a useful rotation guy. If Spencer can bring the same energy he showed in Golden State, he might earn himself a longer look.
The Suns have a championship-or-bust vibe right now. Adding a 29-year-old wing who can shoot and defend a little isn’t going to headline SportsCenter, but it’s the kind of housekeeping that contenders do. Spencer probably won’t be the reason they make a deep run. But if he never plays, nobody lost anything either.
