Leeds Veteran Karl Darlow Hits Free Agency. Manchester United Is Waiting.

Manchester United’s goalkeeping situation is getting messy, and Karl Darlow might be the unlikely solution.

The 35-year-old Leeds United keeper is now a free agent after his contract expired. And despite weeks of rumors that he’d signed a new deal at Elland Road, that pen never hit the paper. He’s still available, and now United has a real shot at bringing him in as a backup.

United’s Goalie Depth Is Basically a Hole Right Now

Here’s where things stand for United. Andre Onana is heading back to Trabzonspor on another season-long loan, and it sounds like that deal turns permanent eventually. Altay Bayindir is also expected to leave, with chatter about a return to Turkey. Radek Vitek, who might have stepped up, is reportedly being sold. That leaves Senne Lammens and third-stringer Tom Heaton. That’s it.

United needs a number two. Badly. And they need someone Michael Carrick can actually trust to give Lammens a breather without panic setting in. Last season, Carrick ran Lammens into the ground because the alternatives weren’t reliable. Darlow could change that.

Why Darlow Makes Sense (and Why Leeds Might Regret This)

Darlow was huge for Leeds last season. The 6-foot-3 veteran helped them stay up in the Premier League, and you’d think that loyalty would earn him a new deal. But according to Sky Sports, Leeds offered him one and he just hasn’t signed it. He’s reportedly considering his options, with Everton and Manchester United both showing interest.

The fact that he let his contract expire without agreeing to anything new says a lot. His head has been turned. And for INEOS, the hope is that Champions League football at Old Trafford is what did it.

Darlow isn’t a flashy name. He’s 35, he’s not young. But he’s experienced, he’s solid, and he’d cost nothing in transfer fees. For a club trying to manage its budget while staying competitive, that kind of signing has real value.

Everton is also in the mix, but United’s pitch is simple: come be the guy who spells Lammens in a team that plays in Europe’s top competition. That’s not nothing for a veteran who’s spent most of his career bouncing between the Championship and the Premier League.

Leeds might be kicking themselves for not locking him down sooner. But right now, Darlow’s future is wide open, and Manchester United is standing right in that door.
