Ted Leonsis Breaks Silence on Ovechkin’s Return and What It Means for Washington’s Cup Chances

The Washington Capitals made it official a few days ago. Alex Ovechkin is coming back for another season. But the real headline might be how the guy signing the checks reacted to it.

Capitals owner Ted Leonsis didn’t just put out a standard press release and call it a day. He went on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, and posted a photo of himself with Ovechkin alongside a pretty direct message. Here’s what he wrote: “Alex is back. From the day we drafted him, Ovi has played with unmatched passion, relentless drive, and an unwavering commitment to his teammates, our fans, and our city. The greatest goal scorer in NHL history isn’t done writing his Capitals story. Neither are we. Let’s chase another Cup together.”

That’s about as direct as you get from an owner. No hedging, no vague optimism. Just a clear statement of intent.

Leonsis went further in a formal team statement

The owner also released a longer statement through the Capitals, and it’s worth reading between the lines here. He talked about Ovechkin’s “love for the game” and his “relentless drive to win,” which is the kind of stuff you’d expect. But then he pivoted to something more pointed: the roster moves this summer.

“As we look ahead to next season, we are incredibly excited about the work our hockey operations group accomplished this summer to position our team to compete for a playoff berth and contend for the Stanley Cup,” Leonsis said. “Our fans expect nothing less, and our organization has made the investments and difficult decisions necessary to build a new and exciting team.”

That part matters. The Caps have been aggressive this offseason. They brought in multiple veteran pieces, retooled around Ovechkin, and tried to get younger in spots without totally blowing it up. Leonsis is basically telling fans: we saw the window, we’re not wasting it.

Ovechkin is the engine, but the team around him looks different

The obvious story here is Ovechkin chasing Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record. He’s sitting at 853 career goals, which is 41 shy of Gretzky’s 894. If he stays healthy, that record could fall this season or early next. But the Capitals aren’t just running a nostalgia tour. They went out and got players like Pierre-Luc Dubois, Jakob Chychrun, and Andrew Mangiapane this summer. That’s a real commitment to winning now.

Leonsis has owned the Capitals since 1999. In that time, they’ve won 13 division titles, three Presidents’ Trophies, and one Stanley Cup. That Cup came in 2018. Since then, the team has gone through some lean years and early playoff exits. Bringing Ovechkin back isn’t just about the record chase. It’s about trying to get another banner before he’s done.

The message from ownership is clear. They’re not treating this like a farewell tour. They’re treating it like a last real shot.
