Donovan Mitchell Fires Back at Colin Cowherd Over Jaylen Brown ‘Disease’ Remark

Donovan Mitchell isn’t letting anyone trash Jaylen Brown without a response.

The Cleveland Cavaliers guard took to social media to call out Colin Cowherd after the Fox Sports host called Brown a ‘disease’ inside the Boston Celtics locker room. Cowherd made the comment while discussing Boston’s decision to trade Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George and four draft picks, a move that drew heavy criticism from fans and analysts.

“I had two NBA sources, two people in the league, one an executive, one a scout, say that Jaylen Brown has, it’s a disease. He suddenly thinks he’s the smartest guy in every room he’s in,” Cowherd said. “You make a lot of money, suddenly you’re absolutely sure, you don’t wanna listen to your bosses, you don’t wanna listen to consultants, you don’t wanna listen to teammates.”

Mitchell didn’t hold back when he caught wind of those remarks.

“Critique basketball all you want, but disease is insane. We gotta stop letting people just say whatever. Cmon man!” Mitchell posted.

Brown’s legacy in Boston remains strong

Say what you want about Brown’s fit with the Sixers or whether the Celtics got fair value. But calling a guy who helped bring a title to Boston in 2024 a disease feels like a stretch. Brown averaged 23.8 points and 6.1 rebounds that season and was a key piece of a team that looked unstoppable in the playoffs. Even after the trade, plenty of Celtics fans still respect what he did there.

Cowherd’s sources might have gripes. But going straight to character attack mode instead of just talking basketball is what got Mitchell fired up.

Mitchell’s own season was quietly elite

While defending his fellow star, Mitchell put together another monster year in Cleveland. He averaged 27.9 points, 5.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds across 70 games. The Cavs finished 52-30, good for fourth in the East. They knocked off the Toronto Raptors and Detroit Pistons in seven-game series to reach the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2018. But the New York Knicks swept them in four games on their way to the championship.

Mitchell has never been shy about speaking up when he thinks someone is being treated unfairly. And in this case, he made it clear: critique the jump shot, not the person.
