Three Host Nations, One Historic World Cup Run: Canada, Mexico, USA All Reach Round of 16

The 2026 World Cup was supposed to be a party for North America, but nobody expected the hosts to crash the knockout stage this hard.

Canada, Mexico and the United States all won their Round of 32 matchups over the weekend, pushing all three co-hosts into the Round of 16 for the first time in tournament history. It’s not just a nice story for the locals. It’s a legit statement about where Concacaf soccer stands right now.

Canada’s fairy tale keeps going

Jesse Marsch’s team didn’t get to play knockout games on home soil, but they made the most of their group stage home games in Toronto and Vancouver. They grabbed their first-ever World Cup point in Toronto, then their first-ever win in Vancouver. That got them through Group B and set up a date with South Africa.

Stephen Eustáquio buried a late volley to make it 1-0. That was it. Canada’s first knockout win in program history, secured by one beautiful strike. They’ll face Morocco on July 4 after Morocco knocked out the Netherlands on penalties. Canada won’t be the sentimental favorite in that one. But they’re not just happy to be here anymore.

Mexico handles business in front of a home crowd

Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez scored in the first half against Ecuador. That 2-0 lead held up, and Mexico cruised into the Round of 16. El Tri dominated Group A with wins over South Africa, South Korea and Czechia, and the knockout round looked almost routine.

Now they get England, which had to come from behind against DR Congo. Harry Kane scored twice in the second half to flip a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win. That sets up a massive showdown for Mexico, probably the biggest match in the program’s modern history. Playing at home makes it even louder.

USA grinds through Bosnia, loses Balogun for the next one

The Americans topped Group D and then faced Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. Folarin Balogun scored just before halftime. Malik Tillman added a beautiful free kick in the second half. But Balogun got sent off in the 64th minute after a Video Review, and the USMNT had to fight shorthanded the rest of the way. They held on for a 2-0 win, their second knockout victory in program history.

Belgium awaits. The Belgians beat Senegal 3-2 in extra time, with Youri Tielemans scoring a 125th-minute penalty to complete a comeback. That’s the latest goal in World Cup history, by the way. The US will be without Balogun, which changes things. But this team has already proven it can win ugly.

Three co-hosts. Three wins. One continent watching what happens next.
