Chelsea Snatched Marco Palestra From Inter at the Last Second. The Price Tag Is Eye-Opening.

Chelsea just pulled off one of those transfer heists that makes other fanbases furious and own fans giddy. They got Marco Palestra. The 21-year-old Italian right back was basically packing his bags for Inter Milan. Like, the deal was done. €45 million plus bonuses. A handshake away from signing at San Siro.

Then Chelsea came in and blew that whole thing up.

The Premier League side swooped late and offered Atalanta a reported €60 million, with another €3 million available in add-ons. They also doubled the salary Palestra would have earned at Inter. According to reports, his wages at Stamford Bridge will be over €5 million per season for six years, with an option for a seventh. That’s a lot of money for a kid who just turned 21 in January.

Who Is Marco Palestra Exactly?

He’s a product of Atalanta’s youth system, been there since he was 10. Last season he went on loan to Cagliari and played 37 games, scoring once and adding four assists. Nothing gaudy on the stat sheet, but the tape is impressive. He’s primarily a right back but can play left back or push up into midfield. Versatile, aggressive, comfortable on the ball.

He also made his senior Italy debut in March 2026. Two caps so far. He’d been a regular for Italy’s U19 and U21 teams before that. The trajectory is real.

“I’m very excited to get started,” Palestra told Chelsea’s website. “I’ve felt the energy since the first day Chelsea wanted me. I can’t wait to start, see all the fans, my teammates and the manager.”

What Does This Mean for Chelsea’s Squad?

Manager Xabi Alonso now has another young, versatile piece for his back line. Palestra mentioned Alonso specifically. “He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can’t wait to compete in the Premier League.”

The move also means Atalanta did pretty well here. They’re getting around €57 million up front plus €3 million in bonuses, and they reportedly kept a 10 percent sell-on clause for any future transfer. So if Chelsea flips Palestra down the road, Atalanta gets another cut. Smart business on their part.

As for Inter, they’re left holding nothing. They had him. They thought they had him. Then Chelsea just showed up with a bigger bag and a better contract offer, and that was that. It happens. But it stings more when the player was already in town for the medical.

Palestra will wear Chelsea blue this season. He’ll compete for minutes at right back, potentially rotate with whoever else Alonso has back there, and probably get cup starts and Champions League group stage runouts. The long-term plan is pretty clear: this is a starter in the making, not a depth piece.
