Tottenham just dropped a bag the club has never dropped before. They are paying West Ham £85 million for midfielder Mateus Fernandes, and that is a guaranteed fee according to The Athletic. Not add-ons. Not dreams. Real money.
Manchester United wanted the guy too. They pushed hard, Sky Sports says. But when push came to pound, United walked away. The fee was higher than they wanted to pay, and the wages got steep. Fernandes himself apparently did not make his preference clear either way, which tells you something. United only chases players who really want to be there.
Who is this kid and is he worth it
Fernandes is 21 years old. Portuguese. Came up through Sporting Lisbon’s academy before moving to Southampton and then West Ham. Last season was a disaster for the Hammers — they got relegated — but Fernandes was one of the few guys who could still make a play. Three goals and four assists in 36 Premier League appearances, which is not gaudy, but context matters on a bad team that could not score.
West Ham had to sell. Relegation means EFL financial rules kick in hard, and Fernandes was their most movable asset. They bought him from Southampton last summer for £38 million. One year later they are getting more than double that. Good business for them, even if it hurts to lose him.
This deal breaks Tottenham’s previous record. That was £65 million for Dominic Solanke in 2024. Spurs have been spending this window. Fernandes becomes their fourth signing after picking up Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson on free transfers, plus shelling out £52 million for Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke.
So what does this mean for Spurs? They are spending like a team that thinks it is close. Whether that is true or not, they are not messing around. And for United, they go back to the drawing board with midfield targets they can get at a price they like. The transfer market is not done twisting yet.
