Manchester United and a handful of other European clubs have spent the last few weeks circling Bradley Barcola like sharks. And Paris Saint-Germain just responded with a two-word answer that basically ends the conversation: not for sale.
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, PSG’s hierarchy views the 23-year-old French winger as untouchable this summer. No matter what offers come in. No matter how many new attackers they sign. And no matter Barcola’s own reluctance to sign a contract extension, which has been an open secret for a while now.
This is the kind of stance that usually gets tested when a real bid lands on the table. But Ornstein’s reporting suggests PSG’s internal valuation of Barcola is so far above what clubs are willing to pay that it’s almost a non-starter. He specifically notes that PSG believes Barcola should be valued higher than the £116 million Manchester City is paying for Elliot Anderson. That’s not a random number drop. That’s the club setting a floor.
How did we get here?
Barcola was an absolute monster during PSG’s treble-winning 2024/25 season. 21 goals, 21 assists. He looked like the next superstar in Paris. But last season was different. Luis Enrique started leaning on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue more often, especially in the Champions League, and Barcola’s production slipped to 13 goals and 7 assists. Not terrible by any stretch. But definitely a step back.
The drop in minutes and form fueled all the exit speculation. And when reports surfaced that RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande was prioritizing a move to PSG over Liverpool, it felt like Barcola’s departure was basically inevitable. There’s only so many wingers a team can keep happy.
Except PSG is about to clear some serious payroll. Goncalo Ramos is headed to AC Milan in a huge deal. Lee Kang-in and Randal Kolo Muani are also expected to leave. That frees up both squad space and financial room for Diomande to come in without pushing Barcola out the door.
What this means for Manchester United
United needs help on the left wing and up front, and Barcola’s versatility made him an ideal target. He can play either position. But INEOS isn’t going to pay a British record fee for a player PSG doesn’t want to sell. Especially when Arsenal, Liverpool and Bayern Munich are also sniffing around. This one was always going to be hard. Now it looks borderline impossible.
Barcola is currently at the World Cup with France, so nothing is happening until that tournament wraps up anyway. But PSG’s message has been sent. They’re not looking to negotiate. They’re looking to extend him, even if his camp isn’t eager to sign. And they’re comfortable enough financially to wait him out.
