The Chicago Cubs have made a habit of dragging games into the ninth inning and then snatching the win. Monday night at Wrigley Field was just the latest example.
Seiya Suzuki ripped a two-out single to left field in the bottom of the ninth, scoring the tying and winning runs as the Cubs beat the San Diego Padres 3-2. The ball dropped just in front of the ivy, and Padres outfielder Jase Bowen leaped but couldn’t come down with it. The Wrigley crowd lost it. So did the Cubs dugout.
That was Chicago’s 10th walk-off win of the 2026 season. No other team in baseball has more than seven. The Cubs aren’t blowing anyone out, but they keep finding ways to win the close ones.
Suzuki delivered when it mattered most
Suzuki worked the count to 1-0 against Padres reliever Mason Miller before lifting the ball toward left. It wasn’t crushed. It wasn’t a no-doubter. It just found grass. And that was enough.
MLB posted the moment on X, and it’s the kind of highlight that sums up the Cubs’ season so far. They don’t dominate from start to finish. They hang around, they apply pressure, and eventually something breaks their way.
Monday’s win wasn’t pretty. The Cubs managed only six hits and struck out 11 times. But they got the one hit that mattered.
Padres lose another close one
San Diego has now dropped three straight, and this one stings because they had chances. The Padres got Jake Cronenworth back from the injured list Monday, and he provided an immediate veteran presence in the lineup. But the bullpen couldn’t close it out.
Miller had been solid for San Diego this year, but Suzuki got to him at the worst possible moment. The Padres have now lost six of their last nine and are starting to feel some heat in a tight NL Wild Card race.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell has talked all season about how this team just doesn’t quit. It’s not the sexiest identity, but it’s working. Chicago is 12-5 in one-run games, and their 10 walk-offs are already a franchise record for a single season with months to go.
The series continues Tuesday. The Padres will try to stop the bleeding. The Cubs will try to find another late miracle. At this point, you kind of expect it.
