The San Diego Padres activated Jake Cronenworth from the seven-day concussion injured list Monday afternoon. That alone is news. But the timing tells you more.
Cronenworth rejoins a team that needs every reliable at-bat it can get. The Padres open a three-game home series against the Chicago Cubs at Petco Park on Monday night. And if you’ve been watching the National League standings lately, you know these games carry weight for both sides.
To make room on the active roster, the Padres optioned infielder Will Wagner to Triple-A El Paso. Wagner got some run while Cronenworth was out. He played fine. But the Padres know what they have in Cronenworth, and right now they need his steady glove and left-handed bat in the everyday mix.
More than one roster move
The club also made a bullpen adjustment. Right-handed reliever David Morgan landed on the 15-day injured list with left knee inflammation, retroactive to Sunday. San Diego replaced him by recalling right-hander Bradgley Rodriguez from Double-A San Antonio.
Morgan’s injury isn’t considered something long-term. But the Padres have leaned on their pitching depth all season, so every arm matters. Rodriguez gives manager Craig Stammen another option for the middle or late innings. The team didn’t say how long Morgan is expected to be out, but the move suggests they’re being cautious.
The Padres posted the official transactions on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Monday afternoon. The post was straightforward: “We have made the following roster moves.” That was it. No fanfare. Just a roster update and a link.
What Cronenworth brings back
It hasn’t been a great season for Cronenworth at the plate. He’s hitting .144 with 14 hits, one home run, four RBIs and 13 runs across 32 games. That’s not what anyone expected. But the Padres value what else he gives them. His defense at second base and first base is reliable. He gives Stammen flexibility in how he sets the lineup. And he’s been through enough playoff races to know what this stretch means.
The Padres are trying to stay in the National League playoff picture. Getting Cronenworth back doesn’t fix everything, but it gives them a more balanced infield and another left-handed option against right-handed pitching. The Cubs are coming to town trying to do the same thing. Both teams are in that messy middle of the standings where one series can shift the momentum.
Wagner gave the Padres coverage while Cronenworth recovered. He’s a solid depth piece and will likely be back at some point. But the choice to send him down and restore the regular infield alignment says Stammen and the front office want their usual setup for this series.
The bullpen move matters too. Morgan’s been useful, and his absence creates a hole. Rodriguez doesn’t have much big league experience, but the Padres think he can handle the moment. They’ve pulled relievers from the farm system all year and it’s worked more often than not.
First pitch Monday is at 7:10 p.m. Pacific. Cronenworth is expected to be in the lineup.
