The Vegas Golden Knights just handed a 23-year-old Swedish goalie a three-year extension worth $900,000 per season. And if you haven’t heard of Carl Lindbom yet, you probably will soon.

The deal runs through the 2028-29 season. It’s structured as a two-way contract for the first year and then flips to a one-way deal for the final two. Basically, Vegas is saying: we think this kid is ready, or close to it.

The Numbers Are Real

Lindbom spent most of this past season with Vegas’ AHL affiliate in Henderson. He went 24-5-8 in 37 games. That’s not a typo. His goals-against average was 2.16. His save percentage was .926. He had three shutouts. Those numbers put him third and fourth in the AHL in those categories, respectively.

And he finished the regular season on an absolute heater: 18-0-2 in his last 20 appearances, with a .923 save percentage and a 2.24 GAA. That run helped Henderson finish third in the Pacific Division. It also earned Lindbom AHL Second All-Star Team honors and a spot in the league’s All-Star Game.

In the Calder Cup Playoffs, he went 3-3 with a 2.56 GAA and .913 save percentage. Henderson made it to the Pacific Division Finals before losing to Colorado.

His NHL Debut Was Rough, But He Figured It Out

Lindbom made his NHL debut on Oct. 26 against Tampa Bay. He appeared in eight games total for Vegas this season. The record: 2-4-2, with a 3.00 GAA and a .873 save percentage. He lost his first six NHL starts before finally beating San Jose on Nov. 29. He got another win against the Sharks in his last appearance on Jan. 21.

Not a stunning debut. But the Golden Knights clearly see something in his long-term trajectory, not just his early NHL sample size.

Across two AHL seasons, Lindbom is 42-30-11 with a 2.41 GAA, .919 save percentage and six shutouts. Vegas drafted him in the seventh round of the 2021 draft — 222nd overall. That’s the kind of pick most teams never hear from again.

He also won bronze medals with Sweden at the 2021 U18 World Championship and the 2022 World Junior Championship.

What This Means for Vegas’ Goalie Room

Right now, Adin Hill and Carter Hart are both under contract through next season. So Lindbom isn’t walking into the starter’s job tomorrow. But this extension makes it clear: Vegas sees him as the guy behind those guys, or maybe the guy after them.

Lindbom is 23. Goalies develop at different speeds, but he’s already shown he can dominate at the AHL level. The Golden Knights have a track record of finding value late in drafts and developing it. Lindbom looks like the next test case.
