The Kansas City Chiefs haven’t even started training camp yet, and Patrick Mahomes is already doing things most quarterbacks with his injury history wouldn’t attempt until August. He’s been running individual drills and seven-on-seven work all spring. According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, his arm looks good and he’s trending toward being cleared for full 11-on-11 work when camp opens.
That’s ahead of schedule. Way ahead.
Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL late last season, and the normal rehab timeline for that kind of injury usually keeps a QB in a controlled throwing program through most of the summer. But Mahomes isn’t normal. The Chiefs know that. Which is why they’re being careful not to let him outrun their own plan.
“Let’s call it what it is: Chiefs camp is going to be Patrick Mahomes Watch,” Breer wrote. “They’ll likely pace him some early on. But he’s in a good place, way ahead of the normal ACL/LCL rehab timeline.”
Why the Chiefs Are Playing It Smart
The team has been transparent about one thing: once they tell Mahomes he’s cleared to go, he’s going to go full speed. He’s not the type to ease into contact. So the medical staff is trying to create a plan that holds him back even when he feels ready. That’s harder than it sounds when the player in question is the most competitive guy in the building.
Mahomes has been present for meetings and installs all spring. He’s been throwing. He’s been moving. The question isn’t whether he’ll be ready for Week 1. It’s whether the Chiefs will let him.
The Justin Fields Insurance Policy
Which is why Kansas City traded for Justin Fields in the offseason. That move wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t a blockbuster. But it gave the Chiefs something they didn’t have last year: a veteran QB who can start for however many weeks Mahomes needs to sit. Fields isn’t Mahomes. But he’s good enough to keep a talented roster competitive while the franchise guy finishes his rehab.
If Mahomes starts camp in 11-on-11 work as expected, it’s hard to imagine him missing Week 1. But the Chiefs missed the playoffs last season. They aren’t taking chances. They made moves up and down the roster — defensive line, receiver, offensive line — to make sure this team is deeper than it was a year ago.
The only real variable left is when Mahomes gets the green light. And based on what we’re seeing now, that light might come sooner than anyone predicted.
