Fred VanVleet Picks Up $25 Million Option. What That Means for the Rockets’ Plan.

The Houston Rockets now know exactly where their expensive point guard stands. Fred VanVleet has opted into his $25 million player option for the 2026-27 season, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. That decision ends the immediate uncertainty around his contract, though it does not guarantee he plays out the year in Houston.

VanVleet missed the entire 2025-26 season with a torn ACL. That is a long time to be away from the court, and it has created some questions about what version of him the Rockets might get back. But the last time he played playoff basketball, he was shooting well. That 2024-25 postseason run earned him the two-year, $50 million extension that led to this option.

For his career in Houston over 133 games, VanVleet averaged 15.9 points, 6.9 assists and 3.8 rebounds while shooting 37 percent from three-point range. In his most recent full season, he put up 14.1 points, 5.6 assists and 3.2 rebounds with nearly two steals a night. The numbers are solid. The question is whether the Rockets want to move on and open up the backcourt for someone else.

Reed Sheppard Made the Most of His Opportunity

With VanVleet out, rookie Reed Sheppard was thrown into the fire. He played all 82 games and averaged 13.5 points, 3.4 assists and 2.6 rebounds while hitting 38 percent from deep. That is real production for a first-year guard forced into a starter’s workload. Now the Rockets have two point guards instead of zero, which is a nicer problem to have than last year.

The roster could look a lot different by the time the regular season starts. The Rockets have been bounced in the first round of the playoffs two years in a row. That does not sit well with a front office that has been stockpiling young talent and cap flexibility. A trade involving VanVleet is not out of the question if the right deal comes along. But for now, he is locked in. Houston knows what they have and what they’re paying for it.

Whether VanVleet stays or gets moved, the Rockets have a clearer picture of their roster going into next season. That is more than they had a month ago.
