Mitchell Robinson Has a Day Named After Him Now. His Next Move Could Reshape the Knicks.

Mitchell Robinson just became an NBA champion and he’s still wrapping his head around it. The Knicks center, who has been with the team longer than anyone else on the current roster, took a moment this week to reflect on what it all means. And he made it personal.

In a Facebook post that dropped two weeks after New York’s Finals win over the San Antonio Spurs, Robinson said June 25 is now officially his day. Not metaphorically. The city gave him a day.

“The last two weeks have been the highlight of my life, and I am finding it difficult to articulate my appreciation for this extraordinary moment,” he wrote. “After battling my personal demons and continuing to push forward, I am grateful to everyone who has supported me on my path to becoming a world champion.”

It’s not often you hear a 7-foot center talk that openly about the lows. Robinson admitted there were times he felt like he didn’t belong. But he made it through, and now he’s got the ring and a parade to prove it. He thanked God, his friends and his family for sticking with him when things got dark.

So what happens next? That’s the question every Knicks fan is chewing on right now.

Robinson’s free agency could get complicated fast

Robinson is the longest-tenured Knick, drafted in the second round back in 2018. He’s seen the rebuild, the false starts, the playoff losses, and finally the trophy. But his contract situation is not straightforward.

When asked recently about leaving, Robinson kept it wide open. “We can see what happens,” he said. He also said he’d love to “run it back” and called it a “possibility.” That’s not exactly a commitment.

Here’s the issue. The Knicks are already flirting with the second apron, and owner James Dolan has been clear about not crossing that line. Keeping the entire core together would mean some players taking pay cuts. That’s a hard sell after winning a title, especially for a guy who just grabbed 10 rebounds in Game 5 — including a clutch offensive board on a missed Josh Hart free throw late in the fourth quarter.

Robinson’s value is probably higher now than it’s ever been. He anchored the defense, cleaned the glass and stayed out of foul trouble when it mattered most. Another team with cap space could offer him a deal the Knicks simply can’t match without blowing up the payroll.

For now, Robinson is enjoying the moment. He earned that. But the clock is ticking on a decision that could change how the Knicks look next season and beyond.
