The idea of Kawhi Leonard landing in Dallas? Not happening. At least not according to people who actually know what the Mavericks are thinking.
Multiple league sources, including Marc Stein’s reporting, have made it clear that Dallas is not considered a ‘plausible destination’ for the 35-year-old forward. And the reasoning comes down to one name: Cooper Flagg.
Masai Ujiri, now running the Mavericks’ front office after his tenure in Toronto, has been upfront about this. When he traded for Kawhi back in 2018, it was a win-now gamble that paid off with a championship. But this time the math is different. Ujiri has already fired head coach Jason Kidd and made multiple roster moves with an eye on building around Flagg, the 19-year-old rookie who looks like a generational talent.
Ujiri basically said as much publicly.
“We have a 19-year-old generational player on our roster,” Ujiri said. “We have to think that way. We are not going to make decisions based on winning today. I don’t think that would make sense for the organization.”
That quote is the death knell for any Kawhi-to-Dallas talk. Leonard is still an elite player when healthy, but he’s 35 with a $50.3 million expiring contract. He’d push the Mavericks into immediate win-now mode. That conflicts directly with what Ujiri is trying to build — a sustainable contender that peaks when Flagg hits his prime, not a team that throws its future at a aging star with one year left.
Meanwhile, Leonard has not asked for a trade and has made no indication he’d sign an extension anywhere else. Shams Charania reported that the Clippers and the Toronto Raptors are actually engaged in serious trade talks for him. That makes sense. Toronto is where Leonard won his second ring. They know the risk. They’re also in a different place than Dallas — they don’t have a Cooper Flagg whose timeline demands patience.
So the Mavericks are out. And honestly, it’s hard to argue with that logic. Ujiri’s previous gamble worked. But he’s not about to roll those same dice again when the chips are already stacked for a longer game.
