Manchester United has a midfield problem. Again. Casemiro is gone, Ugarte is hurt, and the team is reportedly looking at Lille’s 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi as a solution. But here’s the catch: Lille wants somewhere between $80 and $100 million for him, and they also want whoever buys him to let him stay on loan for another year. So United could pay nine figures and still not get the player for a full season.
Bouaddi has turned heads at the 2026 World Cup. The Moroccan teenager has been anchoring the midfield for his national team with a composure that makes you forget his age. And that has drawn attention from Manchester City, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and United. But the Red Devils might be the most desperate, and desperation usually costs you.
The Ugarte Problem
Manuel Ugarte was supposed to be United’s answer in midfield. But his long-term injury has left the club scrambling for cover. They already signed Ederson this summer, but that clearly wasn’t enough. And with Casemiro’s contract expiring, the depth chart in central midfield suddenly looks thin.
Bouaddi is talented. No one is arguing that. Scouts have called him a ‘perfectionist’ and praised his maturity. But here’s the thing about him as a player: he’s more of a box-to-box midfielder than a pure holding midfielder. He carries the ball forward, links play, and drives through midfield. He doesn’t sit in front of the defense and screen attacks. If United needs someone to cover for Ugarte specifically, Bouaddi might not be the right tactical fit anyway.
Someone like Andrey Santos, who looks surplus at Chelsea, might make more sense. And United has been linked with him too.
The Price Tag Problem
Paying $80 to $100 million for an 18-year-old is always a gamble. But agreeing to leave him on loan for another year makes it a genuinely bad deal for a team that needs help right now. United needs players who can improve the squad immediately, not expensive projects who won’t show up for a year.
Lille apparently doesn’t want to spend money on a replacement midfielder. So they’d rather take the cash and keep Bouaddi for another season. That’s great for Lille. For United, it’s a tough sell.
Fans online are already split. Some see Bouaddi’s World Cup performances and think he’s worth the risk. Others look at that price tag and loan condition and wonder what the club is thinking. Either way, it’s a decision that will tell you a lot about where United thinks it is right now. And where it thinks it’s going.
