The Boston Celtics are standing at a crossroads this offseason, and the stakes could not be higher. On one side, they have a proven championship trio in Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, and Derrick White — a group that just proved it can get the job done. On the other, whispers of a Giannis Antetokounmpo blockbuster continue to swirl, threatening to tear that core apart.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the noise around trading Brown or White appears to be just that — noise. Speaking on CLNS, Windhorst dropped a bombshell that should calm Celtics fans — for now. “I’m going to tell you I have not actually heard any material, true discussions. I’m certain maybe someone has called on Jaylen Brown, maybe, but I have not heard one iota of Jaylen Brown truly being available or Derrick White being available,” he said. “It is a proven commodity that Jaylen and Jayson and Derrick White are a championship trio. They’re under contract, and it’s big contracts, absolutely.”
But that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from churning. Sources close to the situation claim that Boston would only consider moving Brown if the return were monumental — specifically, a package headlined by Giannis Antetokounmpo. Windhorst, however, poured cold water on that fantasy as well. “I have not heard that Boston is on Giannis’s list. I have not heard that Giannis is prepared to sign the extension with Boston. Just because I haven’t heard doesn’t mean it’s not true. But until those two things are true, I don’t think it’s really something that’s in the world of reality.”
Speculation exploded last week when ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel reported that if the Celtics did make a run at Giannis, Brown would almost certainly be the centerpiece of any deal. “It is certainly not out of the realm of possibilities for the Celtics to trade for Giannis, and if they do so, Brown would be the major roster piece they move as a result. All signs may point to Miami right now for Giannis, but do not count out the Celtics being involved in talks behind the scenes,” Siegel wrote.
Yet Windhorst’s skepticism is hard to ignore. The Celtics have already shown they can win with their current core, and Brad Stevens has earned a reputation for making shrewd personnel moves. One league insider told us that Boston’s front office is “all-in on continuity” — but that could change in a heartbeat if the Bucks become willing to listen on Antetokounmpo. For now, the Celtics appear to be staying the course, but the drama is far from over. The question everyone is asking: would Boston really break up a championship team for a chance at the Greek Freak?
