The rumor mill has been working overtime on a potential Jaylen Brown trade, with the Boston Celtics’ All-Star forward generating plenty of chatter around the league. But one of the more intriguing hypotheticals — a swap sending Brown to the Houston Rockets for Alperen Sengun — appears to be dead in the water.

According to The Stein Line, the Rockets are not currently pursuing Brown despite the obvious connection between the player and Houston head coach Ime Udoka, who coached Brown and the Celtics to the NBA Finals in 2022.

“Such chatter, especially with regard to the Rockets, is bound to be dismissed in some corners by those who remember that Houston vowed for months not to pursue Kevin Durant … only to ultimately trade for Durant last June,” the report said. “Yet sources insist the Rockets have had no recent discussions with Boston about a Brown deal.”

Of course, front offices change their minds. That’s kind of the whole point of the NBA. Houston swore off Durant and then traded for him anyway. So the “no conversations” line doesn’t necessarily mean this won’t happen. But for now, nothing is brewing.

The fit questions

On paper, a Brown-for-Sengun trade makes a decent amount of sense for both sides. The Rockets need another perimeter scorer who can also defend at a high level, and Brown checks both boxes. He’s a proven playoff performer and would instantly become Houston’s best two-way player. For a young team trying to take the next step, that kind of upgrade matters.

Boston’s interest in Sengun is also well known around the league. Pairing him with Jayson Tatum would give the Celtics a skilled big man who can score in the post, pass from the high post, and stretch the floor enough to keep defenses honest. Sengun’s still just 22 years old and already looks like a top-two option in Houston’s offense. The idea of him as a complementary piece next to Tatum is intriguing.

But there’s a gap between “interesting idea” and “actual trade talks.” And according to sources, that gap is wide right now.

What’s the holdup?

Part of it might be that Boston doesn’t see Sengun as enough of a return for a player of Brown’s caliber. Brown is a 27-year-old All-NBA wing who averaged 23 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists last season. He’s had some uneven moments in the playoffs, sure, but he’s still a top-20 player when he’s locked in.

Sengun is younger and has a lower ceiling defensively, but his offensive game is unique. He’s not a traditional stretch five, but he’s effective near the basket and has good vision for a center. The question is whether the Celtics believe they can win a title with him as their second-best player behind Tatum.

That answer might be no for now. But the NBA offseason is long. Things can change fast.
