Celtics Have Clear Limits on Any Jaylen Brown Trade. Here’s What They Won’t Do.

The Boston Celtics have made one thing pretty clear to teams calling about Jaylen Brown: they’ll listen, but they’re not desperate. And they definitely don’t want to make things complicated.

According to a report from ClutchPoints, the Celtics have told inquiring teams they have zero interest in sign-and-trade scenarios involving free agents from other clubs. If Brown gets moved this summer, it’ll be a clean trade. No complicated three-team salary gymnastics that drag on for days. Boston wants either picks, young players, or both. Straightforward stuff.

The Denver Nuggets had internal conversations about whether they could put together a serious offer for Brown. But NBA insider Marc Stein reports those talks never got serious. Denver’s main focus right now is reshaping the roster around Nikola Jokic and getting flexible enough to match any offer sheets for restricted free agent Peyton Watson. That doesn’t leave a lot of room for a Brown-level acquisition.

The Teams That Actually Called

The Houston Rockets and New Orleans Pelicans have both had specific trade conversations with Boston in recent weeks. The Pelicans might be the more interesting fit here. The Celtics have long liked Trey Murphy III, but New Orleans is asking for multiple first-round picks in exchange for him. That’s a steep price even in a Brown trade framework.

The Minnesota Timberwolves also checked in on Brown’s availability before they pulled the trigger on the blockbuster deal for LaMelo Ball with the Hornets. That ship has sailed for now.

Brown Isn’t Asking Out

Here’s the thing that gets lost in all the trade noise. Multiple sources close to the situation told ClutchPoints that Brown has never walked into Brad Stevens’ office and asked for a trade. Not once. The two sides have been through this before. Remember when Kevin Durant’s name was floating around? Brown and the Celtics worked through that together.

And there’s a pretty good reason for Brown to stay. He becomes eligible for a two-year, $142 million contract extension on July 26. That’s not the kind of money you walk away from without thinking twice.

The Giannis Antetokounmpo move to Miami changes the Eastern Conference landscape for sure. It probably makes Boston’s front office think harder about their roster construction. But Brown hasn’t signaled any desire to leave. And the team isn’t in a rush to ship him out for a package that doesn’t make sense.
