Arsenal Bows Out of Alex Scott Race. Manchester United Could Finally Catch a Break.

Manchester United’s summer midfield rebuild has been a mess. And that’s putting it kindly.

They got Ederson done fast enough. Since then? It’s been one door slamming after another. Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali both priced themselves out of reach. Then Mateus Fernandes looked like a done deal until Tottenham jumped in and grabbed pole position.

INEOS has had to scramble. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott became the emergency backup plan. And for once, something might actually go United’s way.

According to Football Transfers, Arsenal has pulled out of the race for the 22-year-old midfielder. The reigning Premier League champions had Scott on their shortlist and reportedly valued him around £80 million. But they’re pivoting to Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes instead.

That leaves United in the clear. The only problem? Bournemouth really doesn’t want to lose him. They’re pushing hard for Scott to sign a new contract, one that would include a £75 million release clause. If he puts pen to paper, United would have to match that number or walk away.

Scott is a versatile midfielder who can play deeper or push forward. He’s not a pure destroyer like United’s fans have been clamoring for, but he’s technically sound and comfortable in possession. At 22, he fits the age profile INEOS seems to value.

But here’s where it gets complicated again. United’s pursuit of a third midfielder took a hit when Manuel Ugarte went down with an injury at the World Cup. That was supposed to be the no-brainer signing. Now the club might need two midfielders instead of one, depending on how long Ugarte is out.

Meanwhile, West Ham is still in the picture for Fernandes. United could circle back if the Spurs deal falls through. Or they could commit to Scott and make Bournemouth an offer that forces their hand.

Right now, United has the inside track on Scott. But with this transfer window, nothing feels certain until a jersey is held up at Old Trafford.
