The New York Mets fired manager Carlos Mendoza on Friday. While a reporter delivered the news live on TV, the team’s mascot danced in the background like nothing happened. It was either oblivious or brutally honest. Probably both.
Mendoza got the ax after the Mets dropped to 34-47, dead last in the NL East. His last six games were losses. The guy just couldn’t stop the bleeding. And as reporter Steve Gelbs stood there telling viewers the manager was done, Mr. Met bobbed and swayed behind him, a surreal moment that instantly became a meme.
Nobody knows if Mr. Met understood what was being said. But honestly, it didn’t matter. The image captured how a lot of Mets fans felt. They watched this thing fall apart all season. By the end, dancing along felt about right.
Why Mendoza’s Seat Was Already Hot
This wasn’t out of nowhere. The 2025 Mets collapsed late in the summer and missed the playoffs entirely. That came after a 2024 team that went to the NLCS. Expectations in Queens were higher than they’d been in years. Owner Steve Cohen spends like a big-market team and wants results.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to Carlos Mendoza for his leadership and unwavering commitment,” Cohen said in a statement. “He represented this organization with integrity and dedication throughout, and I wish him and his family all the best.”
Then he didn’t sugarcoat the rest. “This season has been a disappointment and our fans deserve better than what we’ve delivered.”
That’s owner-speak for “this wasn’t working and we had to do something before the season was completely lost.” Mendoza got about half a season in 2026 before the plug was pulled.
What Happens Now
Andy Green is running the team on an interim basis. He took over Friday and lost to the Phillies right away. The Mets are now 34-48. They play Philadelphia again Saturday. That’s the short-term reality.
Long-term? Cohen has money and patience is thin. The front office will start looking for a permanent replacement. Candidates will be discussed. Names will leak. That’s how this goes.
As for Mr. Met, he’s still dancing. Someone should probably tell him what happened.
