Miami Already Has Giannis. Would They Really Add Ja Morant?

The Miami Heat just pulled off the kind of trade that shifts the balance of power in the Eastern Conference. Giannis Antetokounmpo is a Heat player now. But league insiders are already pushing back on the idea that another superstar could be on the way — specifically Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant.

In a new report for The Stein Line, NBA insiders Jake Fischer and Marc Stein addressed the chatter around Morant’s future and evaluated several possible landing spots. Miami came up in the conversation. The answer wasn’t exactly promising for fans hoping for a superteam.

“Our search for a confirmed Morant trade suitor continues,” Fischer and Stein wrote.

The two reporters also shut down speculation about other teams. The Pelicans, they said, have shown zero interest in Morant this offseason despite persistent rumors. The Timberwolves? Never serious. Minnesota made that clear by quickly closing a deal for LaMelo Ball instead.

That leaves the Heat as the team most frequently linked to Morant — mostly because of the Giannis blockbuster. But Fischer and Stein aren’t convinced the fit makes basketball sense.

“We presume you might want to ask us about Miami,” they wrote. “But we’re certainly skeptical that the Heat would be eager to pair Morant with Antetokounmpo given the obvious floor-spacing issues they would face as a duo.”

Spacing problems and a complicated fit

The concern is pretty straightforward. Morant is one of the most explosive guards in the league. Giannis is a dominant interior force. Neither is a high-volume perimeter shooter. Pairing them together could create real spacing problems in Miami’s half-court offense, even if both guys are All-NBA talents individually.

The Heat already committed serious resources to landing Antetokounmpo. The deal sent Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, multiple first-round picks and additional draft capital to Milwaukee. That was one of the biggest trades in franchise history.

With Giannis now anchoring the roster alongside Bam Adebayo, Miami’s front office seems more focused on adding complementary pieces than chasing another ball-dominant star. Morant, for all his talent, would demand the ball in his hands — and the Heat already have two players who need touches to be effective.

Morant remains under contract with Memphis, and Fischer and Stein say they still haven’t found a confirmed suitor for the former All-Star. That doesn’t mean a trade won’t happen eventually, but for now the reporting suggests Miami isn’t going to be the team that makes that move.

The NBA offseason has already produced some wild deals. This just doesn’t look like it’ll be one of them.
