Pistons Dig In on Jalen Duren. Trade Talk Isn’t Changing That.

There was a moment this week where it looked like the Detroit Pistons might be open to moving Jalen Duren. Contract talks stalled, reports surfaced that the 22-year-old All-Star center was less than thrilled with the initial offer, and suddenly the rumor mill had him headed to Boston or Los Angeles in a sign-and-trade. But according to NBA insider Chris Haynes, that whole narrative is getting shut down fast.

Haynes reported Friday that the Pistons are telling teams around the league: Duren is not available. Not for a blockbuster package. Not for Jaylen Brown. Not for Kawhi Leonard. The organization, he wrote, is “solely focused on coming to terms on an agreement to keep their All-Star center.” That message came straight from Detroit, and it sounds pretty firm.

The timing matters. Just a day earlier, The Athletic’s Sam Amick reported that the gap between Duren and the Pistons in restricted free agency negotiations was wide enough that the former first-round pick planned to explore sign-and-trade options once they became available. That report fueled speculation that Detroit could pivot toward a major trade, especially with names like Brown and Leonard floating around as potential targets.

But here’s the thing about those rumors. Multiple reports suggested Leonard wouldn’t sign an extension with Detroit anyway, so that path was basically dead on arrival. Brown’s name kept popping up, but Haynes’ update makes it clear: the Pistons aren’t treating Duren like a trade chip. They’re treating him like a foundational piece.

And honestly, why wouldn’t they? Detroit just finished a 60-22 season, grabbed the No. 1 seed in the East, and made a second-round playoff run before falling to Cleveland. Duren is part of a young core that includes Cade Cunningham and All-Defensive first-teamer Ausar Thompson. Breaking that up for a rental or a sideways move doesn’t make much sense.

What happens next with Duren’s contract

Restricted free agency hasn’t officially opened yet, so there’s still time for both sides to find common ground. The Pistons have made it known they want a long-term deal. Duren wants to be paid like the All-Star he is. That gap needs to close, but the door isn’t closing on the relationship itself.

Haynes’ report doesn’t guarantee a deal gets done. But it does kill the idea that Detroit is quietly shopping its young center while publicly saying nice things. The team is betting on Duren as part of its future, and right now, that bet is looking like the only one they’re willing to make.
