The Dallas Stars have a Jason Robertson problem. And it’s not just about money.
According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, via a conversation with JayOnSC, the organization is genuinely concerned that another team could swoop in with an offer sheet for the restricted free agent. Robertson, 24, is coming off a 46-goal season and has established himself as one of the most dangerous wingers in the NHL. That kind of production tends to attract attention, and the Stars know it.
Cap space is tight and the clock is ticking
Dallas has just over $9 million in cap space right now. That sounds like a lot until you look at the full roster picture. Robertson is one of four RFAs the Stars need to sign or replace, and they also have three unrestricted free agents to deal with. So that nine million gets eaten up fast, especially if Robertson wants a deal that reflects his value as a 40-plus goal scorer.
The New Jersey Devils have been linked to Robertson in the rumor mill. A team with cap flexibility and a need for elite scoring could absolutely test Dallas’s commitment by submitting an offer sheet that forces the Stars to either match or lose their guy. If they match, they’re handcuffed financially. If they don’t, they lose a cornerstone player for draft picks.
The Stars fell to the Minnesota Wild in the first round last season. That early exit stung, and it put extra heat on the front office to build a team that can actually compete in the Western Conference. Losing Robertson would make that a lot harder. He’s not just a point producer. He’s the kind of player you build around.
There have also been whispers about a potential trade involving the Ottawa Senators that came up after they moved Brady Tkachuk. But nothing concrete has materialized there, and for now the Stars still control Robertson’s rights.
The danger for Dallas is simple. If they drag their feet too long, another team with cap space and nerve could force the issue. Offer sheets are rare in the NHL, but they happen. And when they happen to a team already squeezed against the cap, they can be devastating. The Stars need to figure out a path forward soon. The Western Conference is not getting any easier, and their window won’t stay open forever.
