Manchester United Just Entered the Julian Alvarez Sweepstakes. Here’s What That Means.

Manchester United have reportedly reached out to Julian Alvarez’s agent. That’s the word out of Spain, where journalist Marcos Duran says the Red Devils are making a real push for the Atletico Madrid striker. Alvarez wants out. Atletico doesn’t want to sell him to Barcelona. And United has Champions League money burning a hole in their pocket.

Let’s back up. Alvarez made it clear this summer he’s done in Madrid. He wants Barcelona. But Atletico has taken a hard line there, refusing to negotiate with their La Liga rivals. They’d rather ship him to a foreign club, and Arsenal and PSG were the names getting thrown around first. Now United has joined the conversation.

Duran says United have directly contacted Alvarez’s agent. The price tag is huge — we’re talking €150 million, around £130 million. That’s elite striker money. But United just clinched a Champions League spot, and INEOS is ready to spend. The midfield is the priority, sure. Michael Carrick needs reinforcements there. But if a top-tier number nine becomes available, you don’t just ignore it.

Here’s the interesting part. Duran also says Atletico might be open to a player-plus-cash deal. They like a few United players — he specifically mentioned that talks have happened with one of them, though he didn’t name names. Marcus Rashford’s name comes up here. He spent last season on loan in Spain and had a really productive year. On paper, he’d be a solid replacement for Alvarez. But swapping two high-profile forwards is messy. Complicated contracts, valuations, personal terms. It’s not impossible, but it’s far from simple.

United has other issues to sort. They need to offload Rashford anyway, and his value is probably higher after that loan spell. But the main focus this window is the midfield. That’s where the bulk of the budget is supposed to go. So how much can they really commit to chasing Alvarez? Maybe they see it as a chance to grab someone special while they can. Or maybe they’re just doing due diligence, seeing if there’s a path that doesn’t wreck their plans.

Arsenal wants him too. PSG wants him. And Alvarez still prefers Barcelona. But if Atletico keeps the door slammed on Barcelona, United might have a real shot. They’ve got the money, they’ve got Champions League football, and they’ve got a connection through Rashford if they go that route. It’s a long shot, sure. But it’s a long shot that just got a lot more interesting.
