Fred Hammond is having a year. Fresh off his NPR Tiny Desk appearance for Black Music Month, the gospel legend has locked in another major gig — this time at a massive HBCU event that’s become a fall staple on the Gulf Coast.
Hammond will headline The Gospel Explosion during the 2026 Gulf Coast Challenge weekend, kicking off a multi-day celebration that’s about way more than just football. The concert is scheduled for Thursday night, the same day organizers expect more than 35 high schools from Alabama and surrounding states to send students to a College and Career Fair. It’s a chance for kids to meet with college reps and explore what’s next after graduation.
Friday brings a team luncheon with student-athletes, alumni, and supporters. Then HBCU Fest takes over later that evening. Saturday starts with the Gulf Coast Challenge Parade rolling through downtown Mobile. The main event kicks off at 4 p.m.
The Gulf Coast Challenge has become one of the must-see matchups on the HBCU calendar. This year it’s Jackson State versus Alabama A&M, two teams that have spent years jockeying for position in the SWAC East Division. These programs know each other well, and the rivalry has teeth.
Jackson State has had the upper hand lately. Alabama A&M last beat the Tigers during the spring 2021 season, and since then it’s been all JSU. Last year’s Gulf Coast Challenge ended 57-24 in favor of Jackson State, which was Sam Shade’s first season running the program. Alabama A&M will be looking to close that gap, and this game feels like a measuring stick for where the Bulldogs really stand against a contender.
But for one night at least, the football takes a backseat. Hammond on that stage, in front of that crowd, during a weekend built around HBCU culture — that’s the kind of moment that reminds you these events are about community, not just the final score.
