Landry Shamet and John Turturro Finally Address the ‘Illegitimate Father’ Joke. Yes, Seriously.

The internet loves a good look-alike joke. But when New York Knicks guard Landry Shamet and actor John Turturro decided to lean into it, the bit turned into something bigger than just a passing meme.

On Wednesday, the two posted a video on Instagram that finally answered the question fans had been asking since the Knicks’ championship run: Are they actually related?

Turturro starts the clip by saying, OK, I’m going to admit now. Then he stops. Shakes his head. No, I’m not. A beat later, he shrugs and says, Yeah, we’re related.

Shamet chimes in with a grin: Cat’s out of the bag. Illegitimate no more.

Turturro walks off camera, adding, It happens.

For the record, they are not actually father and son. The whole thing started when fans noticed Shamet, who is Black, and Turturro, who is white, share a similar facial structure — the same jawline, same smile, same kind of knowing look. The internet ran with it, and Turturro, a longtime Knicks fan who sits courtside at Madison Square Garden, told ESPN he first mentioned the resemblance to Shamet face to face.

I said hello to a bunch of the players and Landry Shamet, Turturro recalled. He said, ‘I know where you sit. You sit behind us.’ Then Turturro dropped the punchline: I didn’t want to tell him that everyone thinks he looks like my illegitimate son.

Shamet clearly thought it was funny. During the Knicks’ championship parade, he posted a shoutout on Instagram to his racially ambiguous illegitimate father.

The timing matters here. The Knicks just won their first NBA title in 53 years, and Shamet was a key part of the rotation. He averaged 7.5 points per game in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, 9.8 in the Eastern Conference Finals, and roughly 6.8 per game in the Finals. Not starter numbers, but the kind of reliable shooting that kept the offense moving when it mattered most.

Shamet and Turturro aren’t blood relatives. But they’ve turned a running joke into a genuine connection — one that helped lighten the pressure of a historic postseason. And honestly, that might matter more than any DNA test ever could.
