Jaylen Brown Trade Talks Are Real. Here’s What the Celtics Are Actually Shopping.

The Boston Celtics haven’t just been kicking tires. They’re on the phone, and they’re doing it with purpose.

According to Shams Charania during ESPN’s NBA draft coverage, the Celtics are actively engaged in trade conversations centered on Jaylen Brown. Multiple teams are involved. And there’s a sense around the league that Boston isn’t just listening — they’re trying to get something done.

But that doesn’t mean a deal is guaranteed to happen. Not by a long shot.

Why Brown is suddenly available

A few weeks ago, Brown’s name surfaced in hypothetical trade packages the Celtics supposedly floated for Giannis Antetokounmpo. That alone wasn’t shocking — you have to offer stars to get a superstar. But now Brown is being discussed in a vacuum, as a standalone trade target, not just a sweetener in a pipe dream for Giannis.

Charania noted that Brown’s supermax contract complicates things. He’s got three years left on that five-year, $304 million extension he signed in 2023. He’s also eligible for another two-year extension worth roughly $142 million. That’s a lot of money for any team to absorb, even one that’s convinced Brown can be their leading man.

“That does not mean, though, that a deal is guaranteed, because Jaylen Brown does have three years left on his contract. He’s got a supermax deal that he’s on. From my understanding, the urgency from either side could change as the weeks go on…His status is very much up in the air in Boston.”

Brown’s numbers tell a complicated story

On the court, Brown put up another All-NBA caliber season in 2025-26. He played 71 games, averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists. His three-point percentage ticked up to 34.7%. He’s still one of the league’s best two-way wings, someone who can guard three positions and create his own shot in the playoffs.

But the supermax is the supermax. It eats up cap space. It limits roster flexibility. And for a Celtics team that just watched the salary cap tighten on everyone, moving Brown’s deal could free up the kind of breathing room Danny Ainge used to covet.

The Celtics haven’t confirmed anything publicly, and Charania stopped short of saying a trade is imminent. But the fact that Boston is actively shopping a Finals MVP from just two seasons ago says a lot about where the front office’s head is at.

Brown’s postseason track record is strong enough that multiple teams should be interested. And it’s worth asking: If Boston does move him, what does that say about the franchise’s long-term faith in Jayson Tatum as the solo star? Or is this just a cold-eyed cap move dressed up as a basketball decision?

For now, Brown’s future is the biggest story hanging over the Celtics’ summer. And the phone keeps ringing.
