Kobbie Mainoo Could Finally Get His First World Cup Start as England Worry About Declan Rice’s Leg

Kobbie Mainoo might finally get the nod for England’s World Cup. And it all depends on whether Declan Rice can shake off a hamstring issue that’s been bothering him since Christmas.

The Manchester United midfielder hasn’t seen a single minute of action in this tournament so far. Thomas Tuchel has stuck with the same midfield trio in both group games: Elliot Anderson, Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham. That group looked sharp enough in the opener against Croatia, especially when Bellingham scored early in the second half to put England back ahead. But the Ghana game was a different story. England walked away with a 0-0 draw and the midfield looked stuck in neutral. They couldn’t slip passes through Ghana’s compact defensive block, they got frustrated in tight spaces, and the creativity dried up.

That flat performance against Ghana is exactly the kind of game where Mainoo’s skill set stands out. He’s comfortable receiving the ball under pressure. He turns out of traffic cleanly. He plays passes that break lines rather than just shuffle sideways. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze came off the bench against Ghana but couldn’t change the momentum either.

Rice’s Health Is the Real Story Right Now

According to Mike Keegan at the Daily Mail, Tuchel has been testing Mainoo alongside Anderson in training sessions leading up to the Panama match. The word is the head coach wanted to see what that pairing looked like in case Rice needed a breather at some point during the tournament. And that point might be now.

Rice has been dealing with a hamstring issue since the holidays. When he left the field at Boston Stadium on Tuesday night, his left calf was taped up heavily. He was limping pretty noticeably. Team staff say the injury isn’t considered serious, but he’s going to be evaluated before anyone makes a decision about the Panama lineup. Anderson also took a hit to his back during that game and will need to be checked out.

So there’s a real chance England rolls out a midfield that looks different than anything we’ve seen so far. Mainoo starting would be a big deal. He’s 21 years old and this would be his first World Cup start. The kid has the composure for it, but actually seeing it happen is another thing entirely.

Reece James Adds Another Layer of Uncertainty

Meanwhile Chelsea’s Reece James remains a question mark. His availability for the Panama game is up in the air, and England’s defensive depth gets thinner without him. That’s not directly related to the midfield situation, but it adds to the sense that this squad is grinding through this group stage banged up and not quite in rhythm.

England faces Panama next with a chance to lock up advancement. But if the midfield can’t create chances again, Tuchel might have bigger problems than one injury report.
