Chelsea Stole Marco Palestra from Inter and the Plan for Him Is Already Clear

Chelsea just pulled off a straight-up hijacking. The club has reached an agreement with Atalanta for right-back Marco Palestra, and the fee is substantial — €55 million, according to Fabrizio Romano. That’s €5 million more than Inter Milan offered, and the Nerazzurri thought they had this one locked down.

Palestra is 21 years old, Italian, and fresh off a breakout season on loan at Cagliari. He played 37 Serie A matches, logged five goal contributions, and walked away with the league’s Best Defender award. Not bad for a kid who was mostly unknown outside of Italy a year ago.

So what does Chelsea see in him? Speed, for one thing. Italian football writer James Horncastle told The Athletic that Palestra is tall and well-built but that his pace is what really jumps out. That combination of size and quickness is rare for a fullback, and it makes him a natural fit for a wing-back role.

And that’s where this gets interesting. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso reportedly pushed hard for this signing, and it’s clear why. Alonso made a three-man defense work brilliantly at Bayer Leverkusen — won the Bundesliga there — and went with a back four at Real Madrid. Now at Chelsea, the early signs point to him going back to three at the back.

Palestra mostly played as a right wing-back for Cagliari last season. That’s exactly the role Alonso needs filled. Reece James has the talent for it but his injury history makes him unreliable. The captain will likely shift to right-sided center-back instead. Malo Gusto? His future just got murkier. The Frenchman has already been linked with Manchester City, and this signing only fuels that speculation.

Palestra also made his senior Italy debut in March during a World Cup playoff semifinal against Northern Ireland. He’s not just a prospect. He’s already playing meaningful minutes at the international level.

Chelsea hasn’t confirmed the deal yet, but Romano’s track record on these things is pretty much spotless. Expect an official announcement soon. For now, it’s another reminder that the Blues are willing to outbid anyone when Alonso identifies his guy.
