Jon Horst stood at the podium after the first night of the 2026 NBA Draft with a problem. He had just traded Giannis Antetokounmpo, the best player in Bucks franchise history, to the Miami Heat. But he couldn’t talk about it. Not a word.
League rules are clear. Until a trade is officially approved by the NBA, nobody involved can comment on it. That’s why Horst opened his press conference with a straightforward warning: don’t ask.
“Good evening, everybody. Thanks for hanging around. Exciting night, exciting few days. Look forward to taking questions for a few minutes. Before I start, just to be clear, until trades are approved by the league, we’re not allowed to comment on anything. So there won’t be conversations about that,” Horst said, according to Mike Prada of The Athletic.
So yeah. That was that.
The Waiting Game
The deal sending Antetokounmpo to Miami in a multi-player swap can’t become official until July 6. That’s when the league’s moratorium lifts and the 2026-27 NBA calendar year actually starts. For now, the whole thing sits in limbo.
ESPN cap analyst Bobby Marks pointed out that the structure of the Bucks-Heat trade will hard-cap Miami at the first apron. The final cap figures won’t be calculated until the moratorium is over. Only then can the league sign off on the transaction.
Commissioner Adam Silver also played it safe during the draft. He announced several trades but never named Antetokounmpo or Julius Randle, who is also reportedly part of the deal. The NBA is taking this no-comment rule seriously.
What Horst Could Talk About
Horst did have some good news to share. The Bucks selected Brayden Burries and Nate Ament in the draft. Both players will join a young core that already includes Ryan Rollins, as well as the guys coming over from the Heat: Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis.
That’s a solid group of young talent for a team that just lost its franchise icon. But for now, the biggest story in Milwaukee is the one nobody can discuss. Horst knows the details. The trade paperwork exists. Everyone’s just waiting for July 6.
