Blackhawks Are Trading the No. 4 Pick for Sabres’ Bowen Byram. Here’s What We Know.

The Chicago Blackhawks are about to do something they haven’t done in years — trade away a top draft pick for a player who can help right now. According to multiple reports, the team is closing in on a deal that sends defenseman Bowen Byram from Buffalo to Chicago, with the No. 4 overall pick in Friday’s NHL Draft going the other way.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was first to connect the dots. “It sounds like talks are intensifying between Buffalo and Chicago involving Bowen Byram,” he reported. Then Frank Seravalli piled on, saying the Sabres are in the process of acquiring that fourth pick as part of the package. He added the deal isn’t done just yet, but it’s close.

This is a pretty big shift in strategy for the Blackhawks. They finished with the second-worst record in the league last season, then got jumped in the draft lottery by Toronto and San Jose, dropping them two spots. For a team that’s been stacking high picks for years, cashing one in for a 23-year-old defenseman signals they think the rebuild might be further along than the standings suggest.

Byram was originally drafted fourth overall by Colorado in 2019, so there’s some symmetry here. He’s got two Stanley Cup rings from his time with the Avalanche, though he was traded to Buffalo in the deal that sent Alex Georgiev to the Rangers. He’s quick, he’s physical, and he can move the puck. The knock has always been injuries — he’s dealt with concussion issues that cost him chunks of time — but when he’s healthy, he’s a top-four defenseman with real upside.

For Buffalo, this is another bold move from a front office that’s been reshaping the roster aggressively. The Sabres already moved Casey Mittelstadt last season and have been stockpiling futures. Grabbing the fourth pick gives them a chance to add another top prospect to a pipeline that’s already loaded up front. They might not be done dealing either.

The Blackhawks need help on the blue line badly. Byram would slot in next to Seth Jones or Alex Vlasic and give them a young, mobile pairing. It’s a gamble — you can count on one hand the number of times Chicago has traded a top-five pick in franchise history — but this is the kind of gamble rebuilding teams eventually have to take. Either you draft and wait, or you trade for somebody who’s already shown he can play.

More on this as it comes together. The draft starts Friday night, so don’t expect a long wait for an official announcement.
