Man United’s Midfield Search Leads to Bournemouth’s Alex Scott as Plan B Emerges

Manchester United have quietly entered the mix for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, according to reports. The Red Devils made initial inquiries about the 22-year-old as they continue reshaping their midfield ahead of next season’s Champions League return.

Scott just turned in a monster year for the Cherries. Thirty-seven Premier League appearances, three goals, and the kind of consistent performances that made him one of the most talked-about young midfielders in England. He’s already logged 89 senior games for Bournemouth, and his ball-carrying ability plus defensive work rate fits the profile United seem to be chasing.

Bournemouth trying to lock him down

The Athletic reported that Bournemouth are pushing hard to get Scott on a new contract. His current deal runs through 2028, so they’re not exactly in panic mode. But when a club like United comes knocking, it changes the math a little.

Bournemouth know what they have here. Scott’s been on a fast track since breaking into the first team, and the club is expected to demand a serious fee if they let him go. That’s the problem for United — they’re already dealing with sticker shock elsewhere.

United’s midfield shuffle continues

Here’s where this gets interesting. United already agreed to bring in Ederson from Atalanta, with that deal expected to go through in July. But Casemiro is leaving, and Manuel Ugarte is reportedly on the way out too. That’s two senior midfielders out the door with only one coming in so far.

West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes is still the primary target for United, but there’s a catch. The Hammers want around $80 million for him, and negotiations have hit a wall at that price. Scott becomes a logical alternative — maybe even a smarter long-term play depending on who you ask.

Scott is two years younger than Fernandes, already proven in the Premier League, and wouldn’t come with the same inflated price tag. Probably. Bournemouth isn’t exactly known for giving players away, but the fee should be more manageable than what West Ham is asking.

Michael Carrick’s side (yes, United’s midfield legend is now part of the scouting conversation) sees Scott as someone who could slot in without a massive adjustment period. He’s played against Premier League competition. He knows the league. That’s not nothing.

Whether United actually pull the trigger depends on how the Fernandes talks shake out. But Scott’s name being on the table at all tells you United’s midfield rebuild is going deeper than just one big signing.
