Manchester United has been quietly doing its homework on Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong for months. But if the Blues have their way, that scouting report won’t matter this summer.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, speaking on the London is Blue podcast, Chelsea’s stance on the 20-year-old is clear: he’s not going anywhere. Jacobs said the club considers Acheampong untouchable and has no intention of entertaining offers. That includes interest from United, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich — all of whom have checked in on the versatile defender over the past year.
Acheampong came through Chelsea’s academy, joining the Under-8 squad back in 2014. He made his first-team debut in May 2024 and has since racked up 30 appearances across all competitions, with 14 starts. Last season he scored two goals while playing both center-back and right-back. At 6’3″, he’s got the frame to handle physical forwards and the composure on the ball that modern systems demand. He can even slide over to left-back if needed.
United’s interest makes sense on paper. Harry Maguire is getting older, Matthijs de Ligt has been sidelined with a back injury since December, and Lisandro Martinez’s fitness history is spotty at best. Acheampong would compete with Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven for minutes and could lock down a spot in United’s backline for years. But prying him out of Stamford Bridge won’t be easy.
Chelsea’s leverage and the Xabi Alonso factor
Acheampong signed a contract that runs through 2029, so Chelsea holds all the cards. They don’t need to sell, and they’ve made that public. But the final word likely belongs to Xabi Alonso, who’s expected to take over as Chelsea manager this summer. If Alonso sees Acheampong as part of his plans, the door slams shut for good.
A previous report suggested United could land the defender for around £25 million. But that was before Chelsea circled the wagons. Now the price tag is irrelevant if the club won’t even listen.
United’s midfield rebuild is further along — a move for Atalanta’s Ederson is reportedly close to completion, pending official confirmation — and the club still plans to upgrade at left-back and in attack as they prepare for Champions League football next season. Center-back wasn’t priority one, but it might move up the list depending on what happens with de Ligt’s recovery and Maguire’s future.
For now, Acheampong remains a Blue. And Chelsea isn’t blinking.
